Ian’s story:
55 years of age
Background:
During our first meeting Ian told me that had recently relocated to Brighton from London with his Parter. During this time he found that his habits and self care had slipped and that he had gained a lot of weight.
Ian’s Fitness Objectives:
To be able to commute without back pain.
To return to a healthy weight.
To manage choices whilst travelling for business.
Diet objectives: To eat in a way that supports healthy ageing and to avoid excesses that could be a result of work stresses.
Overall aims: Change shape and to regain confidence in the gym, as well as feeling stronger.
The Three Pillars of Fitness solution: Movement, Nourishment and Mindset
Movement:
All of Ian’s PT sessions took place in a local gym. Following an extensive movement assessment our priority was to
-Rebuild the confidence that he previously had in a gym environment.
-Improve posture by conditioning and evening out his leg strength
-Utilise his rowing machine at home and create new movement habits.
Ian is now happy to visit the gym regularly on his own (usually 3 times a week in addition to our session). His posture has improved and his head is better aligned with his shoulders. Ian’s core muscles are allowing his back to relax and to reduce tension. The amount of back pain that Ian experiences has reduced significantly and he has a number of stretches and exercises he can do to keep pain to a minimum. He now regularly rows for 20 minutes at a time.
Nourishment:
Ian was familiar with and like the Nutri-check app so together we used this to ensure that he is hitting nutrient targets for Carbohydrates, Protein and fats, as well as overall energy consumption. This ensures that he loses weight week on week (as is reflected in his scale weight results right).
Mindset:
For Ian the biggest mindset challenge was to remain accountable for his choices particularly on days where he would be commuting into London. We stayed in contact between sessions by exchanging texts and watsapp videos around a weekly check in document. I send check in’s to all of my clients on Friday, to be returned by Sunday evenings. I oversee the check in on Mondays and check priorities for the coming week. I would also add some advice which supports Ian’s success over the weeks.
Outcomes:
Weight lost: 3 stone 1 pound
Health check in score: 43/ 50 January 2022 to 50/50 August 2023
Andy’s reflections “When Ian and I first met he told me about having worked with a PT previously in London, it was clear that he was prepared to make some changes and really needed to be held accountable. With extensive workouts food logging and the option to row at home. Ian has done an incredible job to achieve these results, alongside a stress planning application, commuting to London (2 hours a day) and having been recently promoted. It would have been easy to make excuses but Ian didn’t allow that to happen.
Keep up the good work Ian. It’s a pleasure to be a part of your progress.
“The difference is quite remarkable. I have learnt that I can maintain a healthy lifestyle, hit a decent number of steps and losE weight even when I am away on international business!”

Update: March 2024
Ian continues to work with me to improve his health, he has set his next scale goal as 14st, he is currently 14.5 stone. With his work ethic and determination, I know this goal is just a couple of weeks away. Ian is also really pleased to be running on the treadmill instead of walking. Well done Ian, I look forward to helping you to achieve this goal.
